Emergency Medical Services

The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department’s EMS Division operates out of the district’s three stations at the Advanced Life Support Level (ALS) with two primary, two backup ambulances, and two ALS engines. All ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including Stryker Power Pro cots, Lifepak 15 heart monitors, secured medication storage with climate controls, and identical medical equipment and bags. Each ALS engine is equipped with the equipment needed to provide medical care should an engine arrive before an ambulance. The equipment carried includes secured medication storage with climate controls, Lifepak 12 heart monitor, and a complete medical equipment bag which is identical to the bags carried on the ambulances. JGMFD uses electronic patient care reports (ePCR) which allows the use of iPads to complete reports streamlining record keeping and information sharing with local hospitals. Medication and medical equipment control are accomplished through the use of two U-Cap-It vending machines to provide a high level of security and temperature control.

The EMS Division is led by a Captain and Dr. Sydney Leach is the medical director and is employed at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She has streamlined the system into having one set of protocols and standard operating guidelines and is active in our service and provides case review and refresher training to our staff.
