Daylight Saving Time Tips

The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department has a few tips to ensure your safety during Daylight Saving Time.

  • After you replace your batteries, hit the test button to make sure it is working. If it is not, you may need a new smoke alarm.
  • Be sure to also check the manufacture date on both your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Depending upon the manufacturer, detectors can last anywhere from ten years. The smoke alarm manufacture date is usually located on the back of the alarm and replace smoke alarms older than 10 years.
  • If you are renting a house or apartment, it is the landlords’ obligation to make sure the smoke detectors are working. However, as a renter, you have an obligation to ensure they are working too. If you are a renter and you move into an unoccupied space, it is now your responsibility to maintain the smoke detector.
  • It is also a good idea to prepare and practice an escape plan!  Plan where to meet outside. And, once you’re out, Stay out!
  • Develop a fire escape plan that includes two ways out of every room in the home and practice the plan with your entire family.
  • Prepare a home safety kit that includes a working flashlight and fresh batteries.

Remember, almost every day a smoke alarm saves somebody’s life.
