Neighborhood Inspector
Under general supervision of the Building Official, conducts enforcement of the City housing codes, nuisance codes and zoning, including but not limited to the following: rental housing, nuisance, property maintenance and zoning code violations. Performs related work by completing inspections and determining appropriate enforcement and abatement procedures as required with minimal supervision.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Investigates public complaints regarding nuisance, hazardous/illegal conditions and violations of the Property Maintenance Code and Zoning Ordinance.
  • Inspects properties for compliance and performs abatement procedures related to City nuisances and zoning code violations, including, but not limited to general nuisance; grass and weeds; junk and abandoned vehicles; diseased, dead and dying trees.
  • Administers the City’s Rental Inspection Program by inspecting properties, issuing Rental Certificates and responding to tenant concerns.
  • Communicates effectively with residents, contractors, property owners and applicants.
  • Provides appropriate information to contractors, property owners, landlords and others regarding code requirements and regulations.
  • Conducts permit review and administration for fences, signs, and rental housing inspections.
  • Conducts general code enforcement for other aspects of the City code that may arise.
  • Accurately interpret, analyze, apply and enforce a wide range of City codes.
  • Assist the Building Official in the review and update of applicable City codes. 
  • Maintain accurate records of all inspections, nuisance postings, and correspondence. Schedule appointments as required.
  • Makes decisions on complex or controversial problems related to field inspection activities.
  • Drives to and from inspection sites as needed.
  • Continually works toward the most effective and efficient methods of conducting inspections and enforcing codes while emphasizing optimum customer service.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Hourly pay: $29.14 - $34.84

Seasonal Maintenance Workers - Parks
The City of Johnston is looking for seasonal Maintenance Workers in our Streets, Parks, and Water/Wastewater departments.  We have flexible hours, and you can begin work in the Spring, and work through the fall, or whatever timeframe fits your schedule.

Responsibilities for the Parks Department you may be:

  • Cleaning and maintaining park equipment, buildings, grounds and city facilities 
  • Mowing, weed trimming, raking, mulching, seeding and watering park grounds 
  • Maintaining landscaped areas, pulling weeds, planting landscape, watering landscape beds and trees, pruning trees and shrubs and other duties as assigned.
  • Picking up and hauling trash from park grounds to keep city parks clean and safe.
  • Performing general maintenance, repairs, cleaning shelters, restrooms picnic tables, benches, and other city facilities. 

Hourly pay: $15-$20, depending on department and qualifications
